Dozono to file for Portland mayor

Businessman to seek public campaign funds

Capping weeks of growing speculation, Portland businessman Sho Dozono will offically file to run for mayor Monday morning.

According to lobbyist and Dozono advisor Len Bergstein, Dozono will also file the paperwork to qualify for the city's public campaign finance program. Under the rules governing the program, Dozono will have until Jan. 31 to collect 1,500 individual $5 contributions to qualify for $195,000 in public funds for the primary election.

The most prominent candidate to file for mayor so far is Commissioner Sam Adams, who chose not to run for re-election to his City Council seat.

"Sho believes Portlanders want a real choice in the election," said Bergstein. "We wouldn't be surprised if some Adams supporters contribute to the campaign, juat to have a choice."

Dozono is a well-known business and civic leader. He owns the Azumano travel agency and has helped organize a number of public activities, ranging from rallies for the schools to shopping trips to New York afer the 911 terrorist attacks and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Re: Dozono to file for Portland mayor

Even though I live in Vancouver, and can't vote, it is good to see the possibility of a choice other than the gaggle of clones that have controlled the Portland City Council and Mayorship for too many years. If it is legal, I will be sending my $5.00 donation to Mr. Dozono's campaign.

"At least he's not the same old died in the wool good ol boys club member" - seems to be the same type of comments that were made about Potter before he got elected - and who has proven he is absolutly worthless as a mayor. Let's vote for someone this time that has a proven track record of making things happen.

Don Foster:

From the good news department, you are still welcome to donate $5.00 and sign Sho's qualifying petition: doesn't matter where you live, or whether or not you vote, or even if you're a U.S. Citizen (or not).

In fact, all of your minor children and relatives across the globe are welcome to send $5.00 and sign a petition too.

Ain't Public Financing grand?

Ahhh,..a breath of fresh air. Finally, an open-minded AND intelligent individual.

This is good news as the citizens of Portland deserve a qualified person who did not learn their trade in the Vera Katz school of government.

Re: Dozono to file for Portland mayor

The problem with Dozono is that he really doesn't offer an alternative to Adams. His basic political philosophy is very similar--- tax and spend, City Club member with very liberal credentials. He offers no real change to what we have now.

Re: Dozono to file for Portland mayor

Messr. Tee,

Your information is out of date. The Auditor's Office now requires $5 qualifying contributions to come from registered voters in the City of Portland.

The Vancouverite can donate $5, but it would count as "seed money." Seed money does not help the candidate qualify for public funding. In fact, the sum total of all seed money contributions are deducted from the $200,000 the city gives to Mayoral candidates who qualify for public financing.

Also, to answer someone else's question. Mayoral candidates are required to collect 1,500 contributions. City Commissioner candidates are required to collect 1,000.

So, where does one find his petition in order to sign it and make the $5 donation? January 31st is not far away.

Re: Dozono to file for Portland mayor

I was pretty surprised to hear that Dozono is going with public financing, for two reasons.

First, I assumed he was the candidate of the downtown business establishment. They worked very hard to defeat public campaign financing.

Secondly, there are only three weeks left to collect signatures. If he pulls that off, it means he has been working on preparing an organization for quite some time.

Is it possible that he is entering under public financing because he knows it is politically popular but also knows the time frame will prevent him from succeeding... after which he will get bundles from the PBA?

Time will tell, I guess.

Re: Dozono to file for Portland mayor

So let me get this straight: Sho just moved here from Beaverton last March, and now he's running for Mayor and trying to use the city's public financing? He hasn't been paying Portland taxes, but he wants to use the Portland taxpayers' money to fund his campaign? Seems a little ironic...

Re: Dozono to file for Portland mayor

The last thing I read about Sho Dozono was that he

took money from a 2 year olds trust fund left to him by

his deceased father . I beleive the amount was over a million dollars that Sho Dozono commingled with Azumano

Travel accounts.
